SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The leader of western Massachusetts’ Roman Catholic Diocese is set to submit his resignation, but that does not mean he will be leaving his post right away.
Mark Dupont, spokesperson for the Diocese of Springfield, says that Bishop Timothy McDonnell is required to submit his resignation by his 75th birthday.
The Bishop will reach that age on December 23 of this year.
Dupont adds that in accordance with church law, McDonnell will send his letter of resignation in to the Vatican by that date.
However, Dupont notes that “In many instances, months, if not more than a year, will pass before the Vatican takes any action” and names a successor.
