Man Charged with Trying to Steal Worcester County DA’s Wallet

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — Police say a would-be robber picked the wrong potential victim — Worcester County’s top prosecutor.

The Telegram & Gazette of Worcester reports that District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. was taking out his wallet at the Ciao Bella restaurant in Worcester on Sunday evening when a man snatched it out of his hand.

Early was struggling with the man when an off-duty court officer who recognized the DA came in and went to his aid. The two officials then pulled the man outside to the parking lot, where the officer subdued him and held him for police.

Twenty-seven-year-old Jason Beaudreau of Worcester pleaded not guilty to assault and battery and unarmed robbery at his arraignment on Monday.

Court records indicate that Early got his wallet back.
