LAWRENCE, Mass. (AP) — Lawrence police say they’ve shut down an unlicensed dental office that treated as many as 30 patients a day.

Criminal charges are now being sought against 43-year-old Maira Josefina Villanueva, who claimed to be a doctor in her native Dominican Republic.

She told police she recently opened the office because she has a child and needs money.

Police say she told them she worked on minor dental problems such as toothaches and tightening braces, but did not pull teeth.

Police tell The Eagle-Tribune they discovered the makeshift office, complete with a standard dental chair, on Monday while working on an unrelated narcotics investigation.

Villanueva was issued a summons for posing as a dentist.
