SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Today is the day to support Valley Gives, a local effort to support various charities in western Massachusetts.

The hope is to raise $1 million Wednesday for over 260 local programs.

At the Eastfield Mall, volunteers were wrapping gifts for shoppers with the money collected going towards Habitat for Humanity as part of the Valley Gives program.

For many who are helping raise money, the cause hits close to home.

“Today, we are wrapping up gifts for whoever brings the gifts we wrap the gifts for them they give a donation for habitiat. Its an awesome program. They help a lot of people as they helped my mom. My mom got a brand new house. Congratulations mom,” says Sonia Avila of Springfield.

So far, Valley Gives has raised over $600,000 thousand dollars to benefit local charities.

There’s still time to give. To participate, you can log on to their website to make a donation to a charity of your choice.

Teams will gather at Mama Iguana’s to watch the final totals come in.
