27 Dead at Conn. School, One Other Person Dead at Separate Scene
NEWTOWN, Conn. (WGGB) — Police have confirmed that over two dozen people were shot and killed by a gunman Friday morning.
Conn. State Police Lt. J. Paul Vance says that 27 people died after a shooter entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School around 9:30 a.m.
Vance says that among the dead are 18 kids who were killed at the scene and two that died at an area hospital.
Six adults were also killed and pronounced dead at the scene.
All those shot Friday were confined within two rooms in one section of the building, Vance adds.
The shooter is also dead from what the Associated Press reports was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Vance says that there is another crime scene investigation on-going in Newtown, where another person has been found dead. He wouldn’t elaborate on that investigation.
ABC’s Pierre Thomas reports that the gunman’s mother was a teacher at the school, and she was among those killed.
Newtown is located about 45 minutes southwest of Hartford, in Fairfield County.
ABC40’s Nathan O’Leary and Shannon Hegy are in Newtown and will have the latest as it becomes available.
