Sandy Hook Teacher Remembered for ‘Megawatt Smile’

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — At a Southern Connecticut State University memorial service, professors and students have remembered four of their own who died in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Principal Dawn Hochsprung, counselor Mary Sherlach and teacher’s aide Anne Marie Murphy earned master’s degrees at SCSU. Vicki Soto, a first-grade teacher, was working on a master’s.

At the memorial Tuesday, fellow students remembered how Soto lit up when she talked about her students.

Louise Spear-Swerling, Soto’s adviser, recalls how Soto had accidentally missed a recent appointment because of car problems. But Soto, she recalled, won her over with profuse apologies. She says Soto was sweet and genuine, with a “very winsome, megawatt smile.”
