First New Year’s Baby

New Year's BabySPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – When Maria and Jose thought about celebrating the New Year, they had no idea it would be in the hospital. But someone close to them had other plans.

“I was going to give birth. I was emotional,” said Maria.

She was due January 7th, but instead she gave birth to a healthy baby boy at 9:09 in the morning. While in labor, she realized he would be a New Year’s baby, but she had no idea how special that would be.

“I knew it would be January 1st, but not the first baby to be born out of all the babies,” she said.

Little Ariam was the first new year’s baby born in the area. He was also the first for Maria and Jose. Not surprisingly, as new parents, their feelings during labor were the same.

“I was nervous,” said Jose.

“I was also nervous, I felt like I wouldn’t be able to give birth. I was in a lot of pain,” said Maria.

But even through that pain, they knew that giving birth on New Year’s Day was special on several levels.

Maria recalled, “I felt happy”.

Jose said, speaking as a new father, “I felt proud in having the first baby in this area”.

And a New Year’s baby happens to be somewhat of a tradition in Maria’s family.

“I feel proud because today is my Grandfather’s birthday,” Maria said.

And while her son’s birth on the first of the year was a surprise, and the sharing of birthdays with her Grandfather was also unexpected, it makes her one very happy new mother.

“My grandfather is no longer with us and I’m proud that he (Ariam) was born the same day as my Grandfather. It was something I wasn’t expecting. The arrival of my son…I feel double happiness for my son and my grandfather”.
