Gov. Patrick Tones Down Talk of Gas Tax Hike

deval-patrick2BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick has pushed for a hike in the state’s gas tax in the past, but now says he’s not sure it’s a solution to the state’s transportation financing woes.

Patrick told reporters Thursday that he’s “not certain that a gas tax is going to do for us what needs to be done.”

Patrick and lawmakers are wrestling with ways to pay for improvements to the state’s aging transportation system.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is scheduled to present a series of financing options to Patrick by Monday. He said he expected to be briefed on a draft version Thursday or Friday.

Patrick said he wants a plan which is “not just about plugging holes and patching what is broken but really about investing in a transportation system worthy of a 21st century economy.”
