Conn. Drivers Licenses Urged for Illegal Immigrants

drivingNEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A group of Connecticut religious congregations is calling on state officials to allow illegal immigrants to get drivers’ licenses and register their vehicles.

More than 400 activists gathered Sunday in New Haven to launch a campaign supporting legislation that would expand access to licenses. Several state lawmakers attended and pledged to back a bill during the upcoming legislative session.

Congregations Organized for a New Connecticut says about 54,000 Connecticut residents who must drive to work or take children to school cannot get licenses because they are in the U.S. illegally.

Advocates say allowing immigrants to have drivers’ licenses would improve safety on the roads because the immigrants’ driving skills would be tested. Supporters also say the state would get more revenue from the DMV fees paid by immigrants.
