Suspect Arrested in Overnight Break-In

Francis AvenueHOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) – A fresh coat of snow leads police to a break-in suspect.

On Sunday morning, Holyoke Police arrested Kevin Velez, 21, of 38 Columbus Avenue in Holyoke, after he allegedly broke into a home on Francis Avenue in Holyoke.

According to Holyoke Police Lt. David Fournier, officers responded to a break-in in progress on Francis Avenue, and the suspect fled on foot, heading down Francis Avenue towards Belvedere Avenue.

Police followed fresh footprints in the snow to the suspect’s home on Columbus Avenue, and after further investigation, the officers matched shoe prints left in the snow to the suspect’s shoes. The suspect was arrested at the home on Columbus Avenue.

The break-in is still under investigation.

Velez is charged with breaking and entering to commit a felony, and larceny over $250. The charges may be ammended.

He will be arraigned in Holyoke District Court early this week.

Lt. Fournier added that there have been a series of break-ins in that area in the past week. There is no evidence at this time to connect Velez to those crimes, however.
