River Search for Missing Person Postponed until Tomorrow Morning

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The Springfield Police Department reports that emergency personnel have ended their search for a missing person in the Chicopee River and will resume efforts in the morning.

Around 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, emergency crews responded to the area of the Putts Bridge after someone saw a man on the bridge, then saw that individual jump into the river.

The bridge, which connects Route 21 from the Indian Orchard section of Springfield to Ludlow, was closed for about an hour, but has since reopened.

Police and fire crews were searching from the ground and the air in what Dennis Leger, aide to Springfield’s fire commissioner, calls a recovery operation. He adds that it’s believed that the person has been in the cold water for some time, and is believed to have been swept down river and is under the ice.

Leger notes that the ice on the river is making the search difficult.

ABC40 continues to track this story and will have the latest as it becomes available
