Wanted: Sonny Lopez

lopez, sonnySPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) —  In tonight’s Crime Files a Springfield man makes off with racks of stolen clothing and now police need your help locking him up.

Police say 54-year-old, Sonny Lopez isn’t the brightest criminal.

Breaking into clothing store Elements in broad daylight and in front of witnesses on Chestnut Street.

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney told ABC40 News, “It was 6 o’clock in the morning and someone on the way to work, a passerby, looked in the window and could see Sonny Lopez inside.”

Stealing entire racks of clothing, loading them into his car, a red Honda Accord.

The witness takes down the vehicle’s plate number.

“The passerby went down the street and flagged down a police officer and said I think someone is breaking into Elements,” explains Delaney.

Police show up, but Lopez was already gone.

A search begins, but officers don’t have to travel far.

“A red Honda according with matching plates was found in this parking lot of the YMCA not even a quarter mile away. When police officers looked in the window… and low and behold there’s all the stuff Sonny Lopez stole from Elements and all the clothing. He tried to hide it underneath a coat but he couldn’t hide all the clothing in there,” says Delaney.

Turns out Lopez was renting a room at the YMCA.

Surveillance video outside captures him walking in-and-out of the building, going out to his car with stolen merchandise inside.

Delaney adds, “He hasn’t been back to his room since he broke into the place, so he knows we are looking for him.”

Police believe Lopez is still in the area.

He’s also got a criminal record and is wanted on several charges including larceny and breaking and entering.

If you see Sonny Lopez call 9-1-1 or you can send police an anonymous tip.
