Two Arrested in South Carolina Deemed Persons of Interest in New England Deaths

Police-Arrest2

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina authorities say a Summerville couple arrested on drug charges are persons of interest in a double slaying last month in Massachusetts.

North Charleston police acting at the request of Massachusetts authorities on Tuesday interviewed 32-year-old Anthony Rivera and 27-year-old Crystal Jean Mergenthaler.

A police report states that authorities think Rivera spoke to one of the victims before the killings in Brockton, Mass., on Dec. 29.

North Charleston police say they found the couple’s stories inconsistent, got a search warrant and found crack cocaine at the couple’s residence.

It was not immediately clear if they had attorneys or if there were any charges lodged against them in the Massachusetts slayings.
