Care Van Dedication

Care VanCHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) – It was a very special day for a unique bus used by Elms College nursing students.

Elms College held a ribbon cutting and blessing ceremony on Sunday morning for “caRe vaN”, a 32-foot campus bus used as a mobile nursing unit to provide healthcare services to the homeless and underserved of Chicopee.

The van functions as a mobile nursing unit with two blood pressure stations, an exam room, and a workstation. Services provided include blood pressure checks and monitoring, blood sugar checks, foot care, episodic first aid, minor wound care, patient education on these and other topics, and other healthcare needs that may arise.

Medical services are provided in the van, which parks in the former CVS parking lot, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday.

The plan is to make an additional stop at Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays as well.
