George O’Connell Award Given in Holyoke

oconnell awardHOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) — Another member of Holyoke’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee was honored at the Knights of Columbus today.

James Leahy was surprised when he was named the recipient of the George O’Connell award.

It’s given annually to the person who has significantly contributed to fundraising efforts for the parade.

“I feel elated, I’m humbled by it,” says Leahy. “I certainly didn’t expect it — if I did, I would be wearing a suit.”

“He has always, always been there, trying to raise a dollar for this committee, because everybody knows it doesn’t go down the street for free,” says Richard Dupuis, the 2013 parade president.

This year, the road race is on Saturday March 16th. The 62nd annual parade will be held on Sunday, March 17th.
