Firefighters Knock Down Red’s Towing Fire
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Emergency personnel have been able to get a fire under control that was burning at a towing company on Riverdale Street in West Springfield, but it’s still not completely out.
The call for the fire at Red’s Towing and Auto Repair came in around 8:30 tonight and the ongoing challenge has been with the fuel oil inside the building.
“They had 1000 gallons of fuel oil there. The tank ruptured causing the fire to spread throughout two (garage) bays of the building,” says Chief Flaherty.
At this time the situation poses no threat to the surrounding community.
But because the fuel oil is making it tougher for firefighters to put out the fire, a special fire truck that sprays foam is being brought in from Longmeadow to help smother the flames.
In the meantime Firefighters have been spraying water from above onto the roof area.
While no water lines at this point have frozen in the cold weather, Chief Flaherty says the other big issue they have to think about is the ice. Once the water gets on the ground it can make for some slippery conditions and firefighters have to be careful.
The fire was first noticed by a company employee in the neighboring office who spotted black smoke on the surveillance cameras.
Currently, traffic which is being diverted from Route 5 South to Brush Hill Avenue is backing up as a result.
Red’s Towing and Auto Repair is located at 1528 Riverdale Street.
No one has been injured in this fire, however a cat who was rescued from the building did sustain some minor injuries.
The cause remains under investigation.
