UMass Student Who Died in Monday’s Fire Identified

amherst fireAMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — The UMass student who died in a three alarm fire that tore through an apartment complex early in the morning Monday has been identified as 21-year-old James Hoffman.

The state’s Chief Medical Examiner made the announcement today.

Hoffman is from Stoughton, Mass.

On Monday at about 4:45 a.m. firefighters responded to a fire at the Rolling Green Apartments, which is located along Route 9 about a half mile from Amherst College.

Upon arriving, firefighters found heavy flames coming from the second floor and the attic. At one point, crews were ordered evacuated from the building because of the intensity of the fire and because the roof partially collapsed.

Hoffman’s body was found on the second floor of one of the burned apartments.

About 30 people who were displaced by the fire and are being helped by the Red Cross. Twenty of those residents are area college students.

The cause of the fire, which damaged ten units, remains under investigation.
