AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A Maine state lawmaker has proposed a bill that would allow teachers and other school employees to carry concealed firearms at school.
Republican state Sen. David Burns says he has been thinking of similar legislation for about a year but made his proposal in response to the death of 20 students and six educators at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school last month.
Burns’ bill would require school employees carrying concealed guns to take a firearms training course and undergo a psychological exam.
It would also require the approval of the local school board, superintendent and principal, as well as the notification of parents.
The bill would also give school districts the authority to hire armed security guards.
Burns is a retired state police trooper from Whiting in eastern Maine.

That’s Not Ok…We So Are A Third World Country Now
Good!!
Fantastic. The only way to combat a criminal is to be able to defend yourself and those that are around you regardless of what Liberals say about disarming private and law abiding citizens.
way to go maine
we were a third world country when we took god out of schools
Lol Lenny.
Oh wait, are being serious?
Damn Jesus freaks.
Sigh* Always back to religion. Because Jesus fixes everything! Give me a break.
You put 1000 guns in 1000 schools and I think one of those guards us Gona make a mistake or go crazy.. Than we Gona say take the guns out of the schools.. I don’t know the answer but I was just thinking that may happen…
Is
They should also be given free bullets and a bonus for every dirt bag they take down.
Who said jesus it could be budda or anything you tool
I don;t believe arming teachers is the answer. We have to look at the safety of the schools first. Ie ; Check in process – bullet proof windows and doors and the use of resource officers. Classroom doors that open from the inside & lock down when necessary…. I have seen some of the teachers in our community and I sure as hell wouldn’t want their hands on a gun – I am an enormous supporter of the 2nd amendment rights — But arming teachers is not the answer – they need to concentrate on how to keep the kids safe – evacuate or hide – whatever the policy may be in a crisis. But not a gun. There is just wayyyy to much that could go VERY wrong with gus in the classroom. Bad idea.
Arming teachers can serve a second purpose. If the kids know teach is packing, you know they’re not gonna act up or bully other kids.
Alpinequeen I think I love you ……. Nothing wrong with arming TRAINED and continually trained people to protect other people. But I stress the training should be ongoing. Similar to the police training. Arming people should never be taken lightly . Train train train and then train some more. Way to go Maine. Did I say train. Lol
Yeah we all know you didn’t mean Buddha. Buddha is not considered a “god”
the only way to fight crime is equality , and caring for our sick . more guns or laws are not the answer . but keep feeding the backwards republican idea of arming teachers and more guns !!! idiots
Can we give teachers professional development, classroom aides and recent textbooks first? Thanks.
If you believe in God, he cannot be taken out of the schools. What was taken out is the use of public funds to support a faith.
you really don’t think do you ?
there are plenty of cooky teachers, in the cloaset drunk teachers, on and on and on and admin that wouldnt be safe to carry oh boy i can see an incident on the horizon.
It’s a free country and if the choose and only if they choose to do so they should be able too.
How about they just keep all the doors locked so if someone want to come in they have to be let in and searched? That always work at my schools. Just have security guards that are armed with pepper spray and taser guns at main doors. I’m sure there are plenty of ways to increase the safety of the students and staff that don’t involved giving all teachers a gun.
Amanda do you watch the news. The psycho at sandy hook shot his way through the door. Stop being sacred of guns and go learn how to handle them and shoot them. The media just scares you . You have a better chance of getting in a car accident than shot. What the hell is wrong with arming well trained personal to fight fire with fire.
Amen !!!
