SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — The man who’s been leading the Springfield fire department on a temporary basis, is now officially its commissioner.
Joseph Conant was sworn in during a ceremony Thursday afternoon at Symphony Hall.
His appointment was on hold until the City Council changed the minimum qualifications for the permanent job.
Under the new ordinance, the commissioner must have a bachelor’s degree or be pursuing a bachelor’s degree, which Conant is doing. “The mayor from day one said that I was his man and he made sure that was going to happen. He’s confident in me. He’s confident that I’m the right person to lead this department. He’s confident that we’re going to keep the community safe”, Conant said after the ceremonies.
Conant has served as acting fire chief for the past year since former Commissioner Gary Cassanelli retired. He says his priority is more training his firefighters.
