It happened early in the morning on December 22nd. Police say they spotted Vergara’s Dodge Magnum on Dwight Street traveling without it’s headlights on. When they spun around to pull him over, Vergara took off.
“He flew up Pearl Street with the officers behind him.” Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney says.
Vergara’s wild chase led him to St. James Avenue where he spun out of control and hit a tree in front of the Harrell Funeral Home.
“The sign of the funeral home was knocked over.” Sgt. Delaney explains. “The officers went over to check on Vergara to make sure he was alright. He was obviously drunk, was slurring his speech and smelled of alcohol.”
Police say the car was unregistered and Vergara’s license was suspended. Vergara even tried fighting with the arresting officer, but failed miserably because he was so intoxicated.
“We take drunk driving very seriously at the Springfield Police Department.” Sgt. Delaney says. “It’s people like this that kill others through road accidents and negligent driving.”
Arrested, Vergara never showed up to court to face charges.
