SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB)- If you think it’s bad enough walking to your car after work…Imagine working outside!
Some post office workers don’t have a choice — and have to find a way to brave the cold to get the job done.
They are out there 7 or 8 hours a day delivering mail to around 500 homes. A mailman that we caught up with today says that he is sure to watch our weather beforehand and then dress accordingly…
“How many layers do you have on today?” Pant -wise I have 3 on, I have a t- shirt, two long sleeve shirts, a sweatshirt, and jacket,” says Mail Carrier Tom Hughes.
He says he also keeps his blood flowing by keeping a good pace. “I’ve been told I walk too fast but it’s just my stride,” says Hughes.
We even found a neighbor braving the cold for his daily exercise, but even he couldn’t imagine walking in Tom’s shoes. “He must be cold as heck doing it all day long.. 8 hours delivering the mail must be hard on him, “ says Moe Routier of Springfield.
People living in the homes he delivers to today are counting on him. “Mail always has to get delivered… Rain, sleet or shine,” says Hughes.
And Tom hasn’t complained one bit…
“I was born and raised in New England so it’s not too bad,” he adds.
