SOUTH HADLEY, (WGGB) — Firefighters are still trying to knock out the flames that are burning the Crack of Dawn Restaurant in South Hadley.
The Fire Department confirms they received the call for a fire there just before 8:00 p.m. tonight.
Our crew on scene says heavy smoke continued to come from the building as of 11:30 p.m. Monday and it hasn’t been an easy fire to tackle. Earlier, firefighters had to get out of the building and go into defensive mode after it was deemed unsafe to be inside.
A portion of the restaurant’s roof has collapsed and the remainder of the structure is in danger of collapsing as well.
Firefighters, who are also dealing with chilly temperatures tonight, will remain throughout the evening and into the morning hours to keep watch on the situation.
Witnesses we spoke to say the restaurant is the place to be for breakfast in the mornings.
“Crack of Dawn is a staple in town. It’s been here since I was growing up, my parents were growing up. It’s where people come for breakfast every Sunday after church,” said April Cowdell, South Hadley.
“It’s the place if you wanna go sit and talk,” said David Friel, South Hadley.
The restaurant is located at 20 Bridge Street which has been closed down to traffic while crews
work.

I would name my restaurant “The Hole” so there would be a fire in the hole. At least if it burned down it would sound cool.
