Popular South Hadley Restaurant Remembered after Fire

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (WGGB) — Fire investigators continue to look into what started a fire that destroyed the “Crack of Dawn” restaurant in South Hadley last night today we are getting a better look at the damage and what it means for their loyal customers..abc40’s tom lewis has the story.

The popular South Hadley eatery was gutted by a devastating fire that broke out shortly before 8:00 Monday night.

“Upon arrival, engine one, ladder one reported heavy fire and heavy smoke in the rear of the building and that point in time, they initiated an offensive attack interior attack. About 15 minutes later, the Chief ordered everyone out,” says South Hadley Fire Capt. Tom Stark

A defensive move that could have spared injury to the firefighters battling the flames

“The roof has collapsed. The condition of the building is deplorable at this time,” Stark adds.

The “Crack of Dawn” was an institution on Bridge Street for years. It was the spot of choice for residents looking for a bite to eat – patrons who still can’t believe its gone

“I was pulling up this morning and I was like I couldn’t believe what happened. [It’s a popular place for people to come grab breakfast right?] Yea. There is a lot of people here every morning,” says Michael Gendreau of Chicopee.

Across the street, the owner of Quality Auto Repair says the restaurant will be missed.

“It’s nice because the customers can go over there and have breakfast while they wait for their car for a quick oil change…some place for them go and eat and sit down. [So now, it’s gone and its going to be tough.] Yea,” adds Brian Bogart of Quality Auto Repair.

The building will now most likely have to come down while fire investigators search for a cause.
