BOSTON (WGGB/AP) — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has selected his former chief-of-staff William “Mo” Cowan to serve as interim U.S. senator until a special election to fill the seat left vacant by Secretary of State designate John Kerry.
A person with knowledge of the appointment who spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made says Patrick picked Cowan. He will serve until the June 25 special election.
The Democratic governor gave little indication whom he favored during his deliberations. The only possible candidate he confirmed speaking with was former Congressman Barney Frank, and then only after Frank told reporters he’d spoken with Patrick.
Michael Dukakis, the former governor and 1988 Democratic presidential nominee, and Victoria Kennedy, widow of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, had also been mentioned as possible candidates for the interim post.

What a frigging joke
Northeastern baby! woo!
Wouldn’t you know a racist would do what he has done. Yep the most competent person available.
@WGGB I don’t see any racial comments unless it has been removed, very unfortunate, haters are always going to hate. Nonetheless on behalf of the entire Northeastern Alumni Committee we are pleased that one of our own will be serving in the U.S. Senate. Husky Pride!
LOL… I love how every time someone questions another moronic , nepotistic Deval Patrick brain **** they are “haters”. You know what I hate? His ridiculous policies that take money out of my pocket and give it to the deadbeats of the state…
Mo Cowan is qualified, the Governor is a very practical man and made an excellent choice.
matt , ok who would you have chosen?
remember this is temp. election is in june . but my guess is that some would vote republican because they are republican !!
He has zero qualifications to do this job. He was a chief of staff. The most qualified person to fill this temporary role would have been Barney Frank considering Patrick is a Democrat.
and Patricks tax package shows he is FAR from practical.
Cowan and Patrick have cultivated a close relationship, and his appointment keeps up a trend of governors appointing close allies to fill Senate vacancies. Former congressman Barney Frank publicly lobbied for the appointment, but in the end, Patrick opted to go with someone he knows especially well.
