SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – A substitute teacher accused of assaulting a student faced a judge Thursday.

Chandi Jones appeared in Springfield District Court for arraignment of one charge of assault and battery.

Kayle Christiansen and her mother Tracy allege that in November, Jones pushed and kicked Kayle during a science class at Kennedy Middle School.

When reached for comment in November, Jones would only say that she was defending herself and denies the assault.

While the school district couldn’t discuss specifics of the case, Azell Cavaan, Chief Communications Officer for Springfield Public Schools, says that a full investigation took place and disciplinary action was taken.

Jones pleaded not guilty and was released on her personal recognizance. She is due back in court in March.
