Keeping Delivery Drivers Safe On The Job
Avtandil Allahverediyev was attacked three times while making deliveries in Springfield.
“They didn’t even ask me anything, they just punched me twice, one here, one here barley broke my glasses,” said Allahverediyev.
He says the jobs was easy money, but he doesn’t want to take the risk anymore.
“I quit because of my kids. I have a family, my wife and two kids … so I’m scared for them,” said Allahverediyev.
Thursday night a delivery driver for a Springfield Chinese Restaurant was attacked. On January 24th a driver from Pizza Works was also robbed. It can even be deadly. Back in 2007 Corey Lind was killed while making a delivery for Domino’s Pizza.
Several delivery drivers who spoke with ABC40 say they wait in their cars and call the customer to give them a heads up they are on the way. This allows them to avoid standing on the street or a porch where they could be a target.
“If they don’t come outside I don’t get out of my car. I just make sure everything is all right no problem with the customer,” said Scarcan Demicri, delivery driver.
Some restaurants have a do not delivery list to prevent drivers from going to dangerous locations.
Allahverediyev says the best thing a driver can do is be aware.
“I told all my friends just to be careful. I’m always praying for those guys,”said Allahverediyev.
Holyoke Police are also still investigating a December robbery where a driver lost his money and car. The car has since been found.
