Light Coating of Snow Causes String of Accidents on I-291
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Emergency crews had their hands full early Sunday morning with three separate crashes, all within minutes of each other on the same highway.
The first accident happened on the Westbound side of Interstate 291 near exit 5. State Police told ABC40 that the driver needed to be extricated from their vehicle after it went off the road and into the woods shortly before 1:30 a.m. The driver was then rushed to Baystate Medical Center.
While police and firefighters were responding to the first accident, they were called to the Eastbound side of I-291 where a driver crashed their car near exit three toward Armory Street. That driver was also transported to Baystate Medical Center.
A third accident was also on the Eastbound side a short time later, this time near the three-mile marker between exits four and five. Again, the driver was taken to the hospital.
State Police said that slick driving conditions due to the weather “absolutely” played a factor in these incidents. Officials want to remind drivers to take it slow even when the amount of snow on the roads is not measurable.
