Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club Has New Home In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club has a new home along the Connecticut River.

The club moved into the vacant building that once housed the Bassett Boat Company.  The city owned site is called the North River Front Park.

“We have been talking about it as a resurgence because the river was such a dominate part of the landscape you know the turn of the 20th century, just sort of bring activity back,” said Jonathan Moss, President PVRC.

The club allows people access to the Connecticut River and teaches rowing lessons. They hope to expand to include canoe and kayak storage along with bike rentals.

“It’s allowing folks who live in Springfield to feel like they can be an outdoors person,” said Moss.

“It’s a great experience, it’s relaxing,” said Brenda Santiago.

Santiago started rowing two years ago thanks to a collaboration between the club and her GED program.

“Rowing helps me stay focused toward my GED, keeps me in a positive tracks and stuff,” said Santiago.

“It’s been wonderful to see the girls take on a new sport and see the city from a different perspective,” said Moss.

Construction on the building is still taking place.  They are planning a grand opening for the spring.
