Plymouth Police Officer Punished for Losing Gun

12-17 Gun controlPLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — The Plymouth police officer who lost his department-issued handgun in Wareham District Court has been suspended for 20 days without pay.

Police Chief Michael Botieri said Tuesday that Capt. John Rogers Jr. will also be required to work 10 days of unpaid extra duty as part of his punishment.

Rogers tells The Patriot Ledger he made “a major error” and because of his rank he should be held to a higher standard.

Police have said that Rogers put the gun down in the courthouse bathroom on Jan. 28 and left it behind. When he went back for it minutes later, it was gone.

The weapon was recovered two days later.

Botieri says this is the first time Rogers has been disciplined in 28 years on the force.
