Springfield School Officials are Taking Self Defense Classes

Self DefenseSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield teachers and administrators were the students tonight as they look to prevent a tragedy like the one at Sandy Hook.

It was all part of a self-defense class being offered by the Springfield Police Department.

The class teaches them how to defend themselves against a school intruder or attacker.

They say by defending themselves, they will be able to protect their students better.

SABIS Student Management Coordinator, Derek Conway told us, “It is our jobs to make sure the kindergarten through 12th grade is safe, but especially the younger kids, that’s our job. We’re in education because we love education, and we want kids to feel safe and be safe on a daily basis.”

Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney says, “This is really a positive thing where we have the school department and the police department working together to make the schools that much safer for people to send their children.”

All Springfield teachers will have the opportunity to take the class according to police.

Funny @mike i don’t see you trying to teach these kids. How about you pony up and get in the classroom. I’m guessing you wouldn’t make it a week. You know why? Because you have a lousy attitude. People like you make me sick. Teachers are some of the hardest working people out there and all they ever do is get dumped on. Have some more respect.
