Elderly Preparations for Winter Weather

NORTHAMPTON, Mass (WGGB)- As the storm draws closer, local senior care experts are encouraging families to help their elderly loved ones and neighbors prepare for the heavy snow.

Many seniors we met today at the Northampton Senior Center plan to stay safely inside tomorrow.  “If you don’t have to go out you shouldn’t go out.  Years and years we had to go out when we worked, but we don’t have to anymore,” says Marlene Niesner.

Cold temperatures and heavy snow can be especially dangerous for older adults.  A Social Worker at Northamption Senior Center today tells us how seniors should best prepare for a snowstorm like the one to come tomorrow… “They should be prepared with extra food that you dont have to cook in case we lose electricity, extra blankets to stay warm, and should have emergency contact numbers on hand,” says Michele Dihlmann.

Elderly and those with heart disease are at special risk during winter conditions, according the the American Heart Association.
