MIAA to Allow All Western Mass Qualifiers to Participate in States

MIAA logoWestfield (WGGB) — The MIAA has changed its course.  Now everyone is going to states.

After an initial decree, that any times recorded at the Western Mass Swimming championships would not count toward State qualifying, the MIAA has pulled a 180, announcing this afternoon that they will allow all Sectional qualifiers to compete in the State championships.

This past Thursday, the MIAA announced that, due to the impending winter storm, it was cancelling all Sectional tournaments — including, of course, the Western Mass tournament.

Then, after some serious backlash from Western Mass parents, students, coaches, administrators, and others, the MIAA allowed Western Mass officials to hold a championship tournament.  But with the stipulation that official banners and awards would not be given out.  That fact will hold true — all Western Mass champions crowned today (Girls at Westfield High School) and tomorrow (Boys at Chicopee Comp High School) will not be listed as official Western Mass champions in the MIAA record books.

Also Monday, the Northampton Blue Devils won the overall team title for Girls Swimming.  Northampton won by one point, over Westfield. Longmeadow came in third.
