Traffic Alert: Gas Leak in Greenfield Closes a Part of Federal Street

Traffic AlertGREENFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A portion of Federal Street in Greenfield has been shut down to traffic due to a gas leak there that is currently being repaired.

Greenfield Fire Captain, John Whitney says a small section in front of Cumberland Farms at 317 Federal Street is closed and will probably remain closed for the rest of the night while crews work.

The Fire Department received a call at 5:30 p.m. today for an odor of gas in the area.

Authorities then evacuated Cumberland Farms, Domino’s Pizza, and Aubuchon Hardware which was about to close anyways.  Shortly thereafter, Berkshire Gas arrived on scene and began working on the problem.

According to Captain Whitney there was a break in the line underground which caused the gas leak.   No word on how such a break could occur though.

About an hour later at around 6:30 p.m., workers for Cumberland Farms and Domino’s were allowed to open back up their stores to the public.

The gas company will continue to work on the situation until all repairs have been properly made.

Captain Whitney says while there’s always a risk to the public when it comes to a gas leak, they took the proper steps by evacuating the area. He also said the perimeter for the gas leak was lessened fairly quickly when Berkshire Gas arrived and began working on controlling the leak.
