Gas Odor at E. Longmeadow High Forces Evacuation

EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WGGB) — A gas odor forced several hundred people out of East Longmeadow High Thursday morning.

Emergency crews were called to East Longmeadow High School around 7:20 Thursday morning after there was a smell of gas near one of the science labs.

The school was immediately evacuated and those inside were walked over to St. Michael’s Church next door as part of the district’s evacuation procedures.

East Longmeadow Superintendent of Schools Gordon Smith says that firefighters and gas company workers then checked the building for any possible leaks.

“We checked all our science rooms, we checked the feeds coming in from the road, and once we had checked everything and the personnel from the gas company confirmed they’re not getting any readings, our firefighters confirmed that they feel good and safe to re-enter, we then started to bring teachers and students back,” Smith notes.

Students and staff were allowed back into the school by about 8:45 a.m. and no injuries were reported.
