SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — February break. To school aged kids those words are music to their ears.
But according to Kirk Smith, the President and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Springfield, it’s also important for children and teens to get out and spend time with their friends instead of being stuck at home.
“It’s important for kids to take a break from school, but they should still have constructive environments that they can play, be around friends and be safe during the break,” Smith said.
Smith adds that idle time, while fine for adults, can be a dangerous temptation for young people who might get into trouble because they are bored.
Which perhaps is why so many area attractions are holding a variety of events all week long. From the YMCA to the Delaney House, there are fun activities for both kids and parents to be involved in.
Time poverty is a phrase coined by Smith. He says while some people may experience economic poverty, many of us in Western Massachusetts experience time poverty which can be a real issue that prevents families from being together.
According to Smith, February break, and other school vacations are a perfect time for families to spend time together.
Below you can find a list of local activities for both children and families that are taking place all next week:
