SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The student who drowned in the swimming pool at Kiley Middle School in Springfield last Friday has been identified as 12-year-old, Marlon Brown.
Azell Murphy Cavaan, Spokesperson for Springfield Public Schools confirmed his identity for us early this evening.
Emergency crews were called to Kiley Middle School on Cooley Street February 15 around 2:00 p.m. and shortly thereafter Brown was rushed to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
At a press conference that night, an emotional Superintendent of Schools, Daniel Warwick expressed his “deepest condolences” to the family of the student and says that a “full and thorough investigation” is underway.
On Saturday, a small group of parents and students, along with more than 50 faculty and staff members, gathered at Kiley Middle School on Cooley Street to take advantage of counseling that was being offered.
When students return from vacation on Monday, February 25, counselors will be on-hand to help with any concerns as well.
Today, Superintendent Warwick announced that all swimming classes are being suspended in light of his apparent drowning.
School officials add that they are cooperating fully with the investigation with law enforcement and that the district itself has opened a full-scale look to determine what happened.

Some poor staff member will be taking the heat. It is avery sad tragedy that happened and staff members are suffering as well as the family
Peace to all those affected. The hardest loss to bear.
You don’t need to tell us a name, not cool.
Love and prayers to that child and his family.and to those poor children present.
Wow finally a name.
The name is not important, except to those close. To them it is quite important. But probably to you, and definitely to me, what’s important is the closure, the knowledge that we can move forward a step at a time. I hope the proceedings are fair, just, and compassionate to all affected.
And we all hug our children a little tighter tonight. How often we take life for granted. I can’t imagine the pain brought to this family and the guilt to those involved.
Kiley is one of the worst schools in the district ask any parent that the child has attendant this school….the whole school should be under investigation ….i removed both my sons from this school and thank god….my heartgoes out to the family and parents should boycott the school
Deep, with full respect for your personal feelings in this affair, I can’t disagree that all facets of why this tragedy happened should be explored. I again hope for fairness and composure in how it is done, both in the official proceedings and in the public forum such as here, with me and with you. Coupling your honest condolences with blanket disparagement of the system is probably not the best means toward accomplishing that.
Worst school ever. Unfortunalety an innocent child lost a live for their negligence. My heart goes out to the parents and family. I am not surprised because this school violates every rule. They use intimidation with children without a parent present to cover themselves. There has been situations where they allow bullying by keeping that trouble child in school risking other children. Shame on them. They should close this school. It is worthless.
My heart goes out to the family. So sad to lose a child no matter the circumstance.
