One Person Dead after Westfield Apartment Building Fire

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Once person is dead following a fire at a Westfield elderly apartment complex.

Fire broke out on the second floor of the General Shepherd Apartments on Thomas Street just after 1:30 p.m. Monday. The complex houses mostly elderly residents.

Most of the building was evacuated shortly after the fire began.

Westfield Police Capt. Michael McCabe says that one person has died. He did not have any information as to the person’s cause of death or their age and gender, but he did note that the death was related to the fire.

Crews from the Agawam and Southwick Fire Departments were called in for mutual aid.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Westfield Police Department and the State’s Fire Marshall Office.

The Red Cross has been called in to assist displaced residents.  Those not directly affected by the fire were allowed back inside.
