HOLYOKE, Mass (WGGB) — Cracking down on a city riddled with drug use. Holyoke Police officers were busy last weekend with a large number of drug busts.
Nearly 500 grams of crack cocaine worth about $30,000 on the streets was all confiscated off the streets over last weekend.
Police say these 13 people from 7 different communities were arrested. The arrests followed lengthy investigations all across the city.
“What they did last week…it was good,” Oscar Rosario, who owns the Old San Juan Bakery on High Street, said.
One of the drug hot spots is often in various sections of High Street.
Rosario has owned the Old San Juan Bakery for 14 years. He and other local business owners say between drug activity and people begging for money, cleaning up the streets is critical.
“We have customers coming in and there’s people right in front of the businesses. They get afraid, they beg for money, they don’t want to come into the businesses,” Rosario said. “That really…it’s a problem.”
“It’s going to make it a safer environment for the kids and for us,” Jose Ocana of Classic Magic Salon said about the drug busts. “Business will eventually go higher and higher as the streets are cleaner and better.”
Police say the 13 suspects were arraigned on charges including drug possession and trafficking, trespassing, and resisting arrest.
While folks in Holyoke told ABC40 they are happy that police are being proactive in cleaning up the streets, they also say that community members need to do their own part.
“If we all get together and at least take care of our little corners. If you own a business like us here, we take of our area,” Ocana said. “If everyone does it like that, I think it will be a safer world for all of us.”
Holyoke detectives worked with the State Police to carry out the raids. They say many of the arrests were the direct result of anonymous citizen tips.
