SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) — Springfield police are stepping up their effort this week to get guns off the streets.
Today from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. you can drop off a gun at the Springfield Police Department, no questions asked, in exchange for a Visa gift card worth $50 for a workable weapon and $100 for an assault rifle.
“When they come to the police station have it in a box or a bag, don’t have it loaded and if going to bring ammo make sure it is in a different bag,” said Sgt. John Delaney.
Sgt. Delaney says many times people have old or unused guns around the house and don’t know how to get rid of them. Those guns can quickly end up on the street and in the wrong hands.
“Just 2 weeks ago a woman left her house to visit her husband who was at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. When she came back her house was broken into, couple of his guns were stolen,” said Delaney.
Springfield police collected $10,000 dollars, donated from local businesses, for the buy-back. Part of the money comes from Baystate Medical Center, where they see their fair share of gunshot wounds. Doctors and staff raised about $2,500.
“If we can prevent one person from getting shot, one child from getting injured it is a success,” said Baystate Medical Center Doctor Kevin Moriarty.
And it’s not just Springfield residents urged to bring in their guns, it’s all of Hampden County.
Just last year, the department confiscated more than 220 guns from crime scenes, arrests, and people without permits. Police won’t say just how many guns they expect to get, but the way they look at it – every weapon turned in will never be involved in a crime.
If you have a gun you’d like to turn in and you can’t bring it to the Springfield Police Department, officers will come to your door to get it
