US Attorney General Visits UMass

holderDARTMOUTH, Mass (WGGB) —    It was eleven weeks ago that gunfire erupted inside Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 students and six educators.

Last night, US Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at the University of Massachusetts law school in Dartmouth about White House plans to prevent similar tragedies.

Holder also talked about what it was like when he toured Sandy Hook, two days after the massacre.. saying it left him determined to do something about guns.

In addition to the White House proposals to re-instate a ban on assault weapons and limit high-capacity ammunition magazines, Holder says the White House has other ideas, including more extensive background checks and a focus on mental illness.

“In examining our laws to make certain that their effective in identifying those who should not have access to firearms,” said Holder.

The Attorney General says he respects 2nd amendment rights of people to own guns, but he says that has to be balanced with public safety.
