Apps to Save Cash: From the Supermarket to the Gas Pump

(WGGB/CNN) — Looking to put more money in your wallet? Look no further than the smartphone in your pocket:

App: ATM Hunter

Why it’s great: This app from MasterCard lets you search for ATMs based on your bank, surcharges, and other features. You can look for ATMs where you are or at an address you are headed to.

App: Grocery iQ

Why it’s great: This app is ideal for anyone who has ever sent their husband to the store for groceries only to have him come back with potato chips and beer.

You can scan the barcodes of the groceries you want (say, the box of Cheerios in your pantry) and Grocery iQ will generate a list of the exact items. It will even categorize them by food group and show you what coupons are available.

Then you can email your list to said husband and up the odds that he will return with the items you requested.

App: Carticipate

Why it’s great: Pinching pennies per gallon sometimes doesn’t add up to much, but a good old-fashioned carpool is a quick way to cut gas bills. Carticipate leverages your social network to arrange ridesharing.

The free app for the iPhone and Facebook matches users with people in their network. Users simply post where they’re driving and when — and the app links them up with local “carticipants” who are going the same way. Users can save locations, plan future trips and simultaneously coordinate multiple trips.
