Thousands Race in Holyoke – Two Celebrate WeddingHOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) — A busy day in Holyoke as 20,000 people swarmed the Paper City for the 38th annual St. Patrick Parade Road Race.
More than 7,000 runners came from across the globe to be a part of it all, and in that sea of thousands – two found love.
Fresh from their wedding the night before, Michael and Katherine Cote of South Hadley made Holyoke’s road race a honeymoon…of sorts.
He was still wearing his tux and she was wrapped in a fur coat over her wedding dress.
“Our first date was the night of the road race and we’ve been going ever since. Might as well go back to where you started,” said Michael, smiling at his new bride.
When asked about her gown, Katherine said she was proud to put it on again. “You only get to wear it once? Who said that?” she asked, laughing.
While they didn’t run, there may or may not have been some friendly competition between another couple at the race. Alastair Craig finished first out of everyone with a time of 29 minutes & 20 seconds, “It was a class a road race. This is as good as it gets,” his girlfriend Amy Hastings won the women’s race in 33:31.
Some ABC40 familiar faces made it across the finish line, whether they were smiling, others admit they couldn’t have finished the 10k without a little help. “You couldn’t get where I am here right now. People are cheering you on and everything. who doesn’t love that? I don’t know who doesn’t,” smiled 10 year old Alexa Ribiero.
One guy came all the way from Ireland just to be here. With the melting pot that the road race is he likes this celebration better than his own countries. “I think it’s just a really good time, everyone can have a good time together,” Stephen Kelly chimed.
Proving that everyone, at least for this weekend is Irish.
