Conn. Football Players Accused of Sexual Assault

court-5

TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Two Connecticut high school football players have been charged in sexual assault cases involving different 13-year-old girls, at least one of whom has been taunted online by dozens of upset classmates.

State court records show that Torrington police charged two 18-year-olds, Edgar Gonzalez and Joan Toribio, with felony second-degree sexual assault last month. Toribio also was charged two weeks ago in another alleged sexual assault case. The arrests were first reported by The Register Citizen.

Both teens have pleaded not guilty.

Gonzalez’s lawyer, J. Patten Brown III, says the allegations against his client appear to involve consensual, but statutorily illegal, sex. A message was left for Toribio’s attorney.

The case has some parallels to one in Steubenville, Ohio, where two football players were convicted this week of raping a girl who was later threatened online.
