Drivers are Concerned About Springfield’s Berkshire Ave and Cottage St. Intersection
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A Wednesday afternoon bus crash is renewing concerns about a dangerous intersection.
The bus crash happened at the corner of Cottage Street and Berkshire Ave. Police say the driver of the bus allegedly ran the stop sign and was hit by a speeding car. Both drivers were cited.
People who travel through the intersection often say drivers speed on the road all the time.
“You have people that use this strip as a race strip continuously. You can find speeds of anywhere between 50, 60 sometimes even 80 MPH,” said Kenneth Charles.
“They think it’s like a race strip,” said Nicole Dernago.
Dernagos seen a number of accidents at the intersection including Wednesday’s crash.
“We were in the office when we heard the crash and looked out the window all we saw was parts flying,” said Dernago.
She isn’t the only one who is concerned about the intersection.
“I’ve been here now, June will be five years for me. I’ve seen several, several bad accidents,” said Rufus Kynard.
“I’ve come into a couple of close calls myself just trying to get you know, get out of here to the street, to the point now where I take a different route,” said Charles.
On December 1st of 2012 a head on collision at the intersection sent two people to the hospital.
Cottage St. and Berkshire Ave. is ranked 73 on the Top 100 High Crash Intersections Report from the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission. The report shows between 2007 and 2009 there were 33 accident at the intersection.
