SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Reports are coming in from a number of different states along the East Coast and from Canada that a meteor might have been spotted in the sky tonight.
The American Meteor Society, based in Geneseo, N.Y., is researching about 400 reports received from nine East Coast States and Canada of sightings that took place somewhere shortly before 8:00 p.m. ET through shortly after 8:00 p.m. ET. And The American Meteor Society says it’s investigating 35 reports of the meteor.
We’ve been hearing as well from local residents that they saw the meteor around 8:00 p.m. too.
Many Twitter users also took to the internet tonight to report that they may have spotted the meteor as well.
In a tweet by AccuWeather.com just after 9:00 p.m. today they state, “Several unconfirmed reports, from Florida to Massachusetts, of a large meteor being spotted between 7:55 and 8:03 p.m. EDT.”
The most recent meteor that was confirmed was in Russia on February 15.
If you spotted the meteor, or even got a photo, let us know on our Facebook page, WGGBSpringfield.

Saw it over Memorial Drive around 8:00 tonight!
sorry I ate Mexican food again
I saw it going into the Wilbraham Big Y around 8!
We saw it – thought it was a shooting star but a brighter greenish color. Made a wish!!!
Dammit i missed it
We saw it while driving west on the MassPike about 8PM. At first we thought it was a plane but then it got bigger and brighter, finally looking like a fireball before it disappeared. A truly amazing sight.
Saw it near belchertown/bondsville area and thought shooting star too. Cool either way!!
It was very cool. Right before 8 pm in Leyden, bright bluish light with a tail. It seemed so close I can’t believe it was so far away. Too big to be a shooting star.
Wow! Cool in the sky not near the ground like they had a couple of months ago in Russia! Yikes!
dam i missed it
