Fundraiser Held for Former Star Athlete

photo (9)SPRINGFIELD, Mass (wggb) — Friends and family of Mike Vaz gathered at the High School of Commerce in Springfield today for the first Mike Vaz Domestic Violence Education & Prevention Fund fundraiser.  The event was a  basketball tournament and also featured speakers who’s mission was to raise awareness for domestic violence in Springfield.

Last month, 28 year-old Vaz was with his girlfriend, Julie Treadwell and her children inside their Springfield home when he heard someone trying to break in. The intruder was 27 year-old Anthony Brown, who was the father of Treadwell’s children. Brown shot and killed Treadwell and then turned the gun on himself. The children made it out safely after Vaz hid them in a closet. Vaz was shot twice and seriously wounded.

Today’s event will raise money for a scholarship fund in memory of Julie Treadwell and help with Vaz’s mounting medical bills.
