Smith Students Support Transgender Applicant

SmithCollegeNORTHAMPTON, Mass – (WGGB) Transgender student Calliope Wong has started a firestorm online when she posted a rejection letter from Smith College to her Tumblr page.

The transgender student was rejected from women’s college…because even though she applied as a female, the fafsa or Free Application For Federal Student Aid…still recognizes her as a male.

Student group “Smith Q and A” is hoping to change the way transgender students are viewed.

“Changing the policy as well as the community of Smith to be open to all transwomen, not only transnational people. We were contacted once by one of the deans, but we haven’t had any official communication with any of the administration,” said member of Smith Q and A who wanted to remain anonymous.

On Friday, Smith College posted this to their Facebook page saying, quote, “A trans student, at Smith, like every student, receives the full support of the college.”

The group, Smith Q and A, hopes to meet with administration when everyone returns from spring break tomorrow.

WGGB encourages readers to share their thoughts and engage in healthy dialogue about the issues. Comments containing personal attacks, profanity, offensive language or advertising will be removed. Please use the report comment function for any posts you feel should be reviewed. Thank you.
