Braintree Karate Instructor Denies Assault Charge
BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — A martial arts instructor at a Braintree studio has pleaded not guilty to a charge of indecently assaulting an underage student.
Forty-year-old Kevin Carmichael of Millis was arraigned Monday in Quincy District Court. A judge set bail at $2,500 dollars and ordered Carmichael to stay away from the alleged victim, her family, and other children under age 18.
Police say Carmichael was arrested Saturday after going to the Braintree police station to talk with detectives, a day after the girl’s mother called police.
A prosecutor said Carmichael told investigators the incident was an accident that happened when he and the girl fell down together during a training exercise at his Masters Self Defense karate school. The girl allegedly told her mother Carmichael sexually assaulted her and then apologized. Prosecutors did not say when the incident happened.
