Three Springfield Schools Locked Down after Afternoon Shooting
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield Police are investigating an afternoon shooting, which has forced three city schools into lockdown.
Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney says that around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, police were called for a disturbance near Avon Place and Maple Street.
When officers got there, they didn’t find anything, but a short time later, Delaney adds that another call came in saying a man suffering from a gunshot wound had walked into a medical clinic on High Street.
The victim, a city man, told investigators that there was a fight in front of his Avon Place home, when he got into the middle of it, and another man pulled out a gun and shot him once.
While police investigated in the neighborhood, Springfield Schools spokesperson Azell Cavaan says that Forest Park Middle School on School Street, Milton Bradley School, and the High School of Commerce were put into lockdown as a precaution.
Delaney notes that a friend drove the victim to the High Street, where he was then transported to Baystate Medical Center. The victim is still in the hospital recovering.
