Arrest Made in Deadly Springfield Hit and Run
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Springfield police arrested 25 year old Mark A. Perez in connection with a deadly hit and run Saturday morning.
The crash happened around 10:00 a.m. on the corner of Carew and Chestnut Streets.
Police say the spotted a white Jeep Cherokee traveling at an extremely high rate of speed from Patton Street onto Main Street.
The vehicle was traveling so fast that the officer had no time to turn his cruiser around to go after the Jeep.
A short while later, calls came into 911 about an accident at the corner of Chestnut Street and Carew Street.
Witnesses said a white Jeep Cherokee smashed into the car causing severe damage to both vehicles and the Jeep drove off.
There were two people inside the Pontiac who were injured. A 59-year-old male driver and a 55-year-old female passenger both from Westfield were transported to Baystate Medical Center.
The female passenger sustained serious trauma and injuries from the crash and later died.
Police eventually traced the Jeep to 25 Narraganset Street and arrested the alleged driver, 25-year-old Mark A. Perez.
He faces several charges including possesion of marijuana, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.
Police say the jepp he was driving was reported stolen earlier in the day.
In additon, police also made 2 additonal arrests at 25 Narraganset: Joseph A. Cruz, age 24, and Hailey Luz Rodriguez, age 20. They both face several drug charges.
The fatal accident is still under investigation.
